First African Regional Meteorological Society Conference Marks a Successful Milestone in Addis Ababa
The inaugural African Regional Meteorological Society (AfMS) Conference took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 20–23 April 2026, bringing together meteorological professionals, researchers, educators, and practitioners from across Africa and beyond for four days of scientific exchange, networking, and collaboration.

Hosted at the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute Conference Hall, the landmark event attracted 200 participants, including 40 delegates from international institutions and 160 participants from Ethiopian organisations and institutions. As the first conference organised by the AfMS, the gathering represented a significant step forward in strengthening meteorological cooperation and capacity development across the continent.

The conference featured a rich scientific programme comprising 43 presentations, including 13 plenary presentations, 24 oral presentations, and 6 poster presentations. Discussions covered a broad range of topics relevant to weather, climate, forecasting services, research, education, and the future of meteorological science in Africa.
Three exhibitions complemented the scientific sessions, providing opportunities for participants to engage with new technologies, services, and initiatives supporting meteorological advancement throughout the region.

Professional development was also a key feature of the conference. One training course was successfully delivered on the opening day, while a second course was postponed due to the delayed arrival of the presenter and will be rescheduled for a later date.
The conference programme began with a warm Meet and Greet Reception on 19 April, where approximately 30 participants, primarily international delegates, had the opportunity to connect with colleagues and conference organisers ahead of the official opening.
A highlight of the week was the AfMS Banquet and Awards Ceremony held on 22 April. During the event, 14 AfMS Awards were presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Society and the meteorological community in the areas of management and leadership, scientific research, and training.
Participants also enjoyed a half-day cultural excursion to two of Addis Ababa’s most notable attractions, the historic Adwa Memorial and the Science Museum, offering visitors a chance to experience Ethiopia’s rich heritage and growing scientific landscape.
While the conference was widely regarded as a success, organisers acknowledged that some challenges were encountered, particularly regarding entry visa arrangements for several international participants. As a first-time event of this scale, such challenges provided valuable lessons that will help guide the planning and delivery of future AfMS conferences.
Feedback from delegates was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing appreciation for the overall organisation and hospitality. Many attendees also voiced their support for holding the Second AfMS Conference in 2028 at the same venue in Addis Ababa.
The Conference Local Arrangements Committee extended its sincere appreciation to the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute for generously providing conference facilities, supporting staff, and essential logistical assistance. Thanks, were also expressed to all participants, presenters, sponsors, members of the Conference Management Committee, the Conference Scientific Arrangements Committee, the Conference Local Arrangements Committee, AfMS staff, consultants, and all others whose contributions helped make the conference a success.
As the African meteorological community looks ahead, the success of this first conference provides a strong foundation for future collaboration, innovation, and scientific excellence across the continent.
