AMS Policy Study
The challenges, opportunities, and needs of communities vary broadly across the United States and its territories, as weather, climate, and geographic variations intersect with dimensions of social vulnerability and equity.
The AMS Policy Program is conducting a rapid study of the top issues in weather, water, and climate for each state/territory. We are also seeking local/regional experts who can speak to these issues, as well as provide insight on equity, inclusion, and justice within their respective state/territory.
We ask that you offer your insights on the challenges, risks, and opportunities for your state(s) or territories using this Google form.

Patrick Burke and his son Levi | | | |
“Although I’m an Oklahoman, we lived in Southern California for a few years when I was a kid. I remember those rare times when we would get a good winter storm coming through, my brother and I would take walkie-talkies to different windows in the house and report to each other on the intensity of the rainfall.… I guess that should have been a sign that I would one day be a rainfall forecaster.”
— Patrick Burke (NOAA/NWS/NCEP/Weather Prediction Center), whose BAMS article provides a behind-the-scenes look at production of the Weather Prediction Center’s Excessive Rainfall Outlook and its role in a collaborative forecast process for heavy rain. Read more of his interview in your
